The main reason why ADD/ADHD medications like Adderall in 2013 are used by college students is in the hopes of achieving better grades in school. A new study shows that these medications actually do not enhance grades of children taking these drugs. The exact reason(s) why these drugs did not raise the grades at this point are unknown and can only be speculated about at this time. Here is a quote from the Wall Street Journal article that referenced multiple studies that came out recently:

“Together, these findings suggest that medication alone isn’t enough to improve academic performance. The medicine may help with focus, but it doesn’t help with deciding what to focus on, experts say. Rather, it needs to be coupled with skills training, such as learning how to organize or prioritize.”

Is it surprising that these synthetic stimulants are not a silver bullet for good grades for children? The WSJ article actually mentioned that these stimulants lowered the grades of some students taking these medications actually. Because children often lack skills training and prioritization skills they in particular seem to benefit the least from ADD/ADHD medications like Adderall and Ritalin. Older people such as college students and especially grad students many times have these necessary skills and may greatly benefit from taking these stimulants that boost focus and energy levels for studying and writing papers. Because not all college students have great organizational skills it would be expected that some college students would not benefit because they do not take their studies very seriously. By this way of logic that is spoken about in the Wall Street Journal it would be expected that the types of people that would greatly benefit from the use of prescription stimulants like Adderall, Ritalin, and other stimulants would be certain college students such as people in medical school and law school.

College students and people who work long hours also take different kinds of over the counter energy boosters to help them increase their productivity at school and work. These can range from minimally effective but useful stimulants as in coffee and energy drinks, to more powerful supplement stacks like Addrena which uses herbal stimulants combined with nootropic supplements that give increased energy and focus. The recent studies only included prescription ADD/ADHD stimulants and did not include nootropic cognitive enhancers in any way which have studies showing their effectiveness for not only ADHD but also more specifically for learning, improved focus, and increased memory levels.

Again like earlier stated this new study shows that there is no silver bullet to fix our problems as our behaviors will always have a huge determination in the end results that we get. For people who are serious about improving their productivity we must first look internally for us to find ways to improve our approach to actually get results. Once we start to organize our approach taking some form of stimulants and/or nootropics can possibly be beneficial to our results. Some statistics show that a small percentage of prescriptions fall into the hands of unintended people who take these drugs to improve their results at school and work. For those who decide not to take take synthetic drugs or cannot get them OTC options that contain herbal stimulants, caffeine, and nootropics can help them get a competitive edge on their peers. As long as you are a hardworking individual with a clear plan, it should be expected that performance enhancing drugs and supplements can help you get the edge in performance that you are looking for.
